III. POSITION DESCRIPTION

A. Appointment

Extension Specialist - 100% Extension

B. Description

August 1, 1989 - Present, Extension Agronomist--San Angelo, Texas

Serve as West Central Texas and Far West Texas Agronomist with educational responsibility in all aspects of Soil and Crop Sciences. Most of the 2.2 million acres of farmed land in this area depends upon limited rainfall for production. The major crops grown are wheat, cotton, grain sorghum, and forage (hay). I work with the 45 County Extension Agents (CEAs) - Agriculture, 4 CEAs in 4-H and youth development positions, four Entomologists, and two horticulturists headquartered in the 46 counties that make up Extension Districts 6 & 7. I coordinate the in-depth Soil and Crop Science oriented training meetings conducted for these county agricultural experts. I provide training and establish applied research plots to assist producers in addressing problems encountered with crop production. Also, assist County Extension Agents and county agricultural committees in planning and conducting educational meetings and applied research to address producers identified needs. Assist in planning and conducting field days and tours in most of the counties served.

During this time period, I have been asked to take on additional job responsibilities in Extension Districts 3 and 6. When the agronomist at Ft. Stockton resigned, I was asked to cover Extension related activities in District 6 those additional duties began August 1, 2000 until present. I am responsible for conducting Soil and Crop Science educational programs, assisting County Extension Agents (CEAs) with their various crop programs, assisting the District Extension Director in conducting an in-depth training program for CEAs, and responded to a number of producer requests. When the agronomist at Ft. Stockton transferred to Uvalde, I covered Extension District 6 from August 1, 1994 until August 15, 1995. I was responsible for conducting Soil and Crop Science educational programs, assisted County Extension Agents (CEAs) with their various crop programs, assisted the District Extension Director in conducting an in-depth training program for CEAs, and responded to a number of producer requests. The farthest points for educational programs given were Del City and Presidio, both are over 300 miles from San Angelo. When the agronomist at Vernon retired in 1991, I covered most of the counties in Extension District 3 for a year until a new agronomist was hired in 1992. I was responsible for conducting Soil and Crop Science educational programs, assisted County Extension Agents (CEAs) with their various crop programs, assisted the District Extension Director in conducting an in-depth training program for CEAs, and responded to a number of producer requests.

Another aspect of my job is education of youth. Brown, Coleman, Fisher, Nolan, and Tom Green counties conduct educational training for school age youth that reside in the county. Tom Green county is the host for the Ag-in-the-Classroom activity co-sponsored by Extension, TAES, and the Texas Farm Bureau. Since 1997 the annual event has had a two-day format that involves over 1400 youth each year. We have over 100 adults involved in planning and conducting this activity. In 2007, I was in charge of the chemical safety training portion of the Texas Farm Safety School held in San Angelo that was sponsored by Progressive Farmer (this is the seventh time the school has been held at this location). We had 90 youth participate in the event. We had over 40 leaders involved in the planning and conducting of this years event.

June 1, 1989 - August 1, 1989, Extension Associate--Lubbock, Texas

Worked under the supervision of Dr. Bob Robinson and Dr. James Supak during sabbatical leave used to complete requirements for Doctorate of Philosophy. Primary responsibility was in analyzing the computer model GOSSYM to determine, and attempt to correct, calibration problems associated with using the model in cotton production in the Texas Southern Plains area.

May 16, 1984 - May 31, 1989, Hockley County Extension Agent, Levelland, Texas

Major responsibilities associated with this position included providing educational training in three areas. Agriculture, Community Development, and Youth. The major crops for the county included: 250,000 acres of cotton, 40,000 acres of grain sorghum, and 15,000 acres of wheat. Responsible for conducting educational training for the 660 county producers in Hockley County. Served as county coordinator, agriculture program leader, and trainer agent. Worked with 213 4-H members in organized clubs, 576 youth in Special Interest Groups, and 449 youth in curriculum Enrichment.

March 16, 1980 - May 15, 1984, Hale County Extension Agent, Plainview, Texas

September 1, 1976 - March 15, 1980, Potter County Extension Agent, Amarillo, Texas

Served as 4-H coordinator in the county for three years, during that time 4-H membership increased to 604 members. The projects supervised and coordinated by this agent included: Livestock production and management of beef, sheep, swine, and poultry, field crop sciences, soil judging, dairy judging, livestock judging, dog care and training, leadership, horticulture, gardening, wildlife, photography, and others. V. SUMMARY OF MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS FROM PLAN OF WORK

A. Major Achievements for Current Year

I have had the opportunity of representing the department of Soil and Crop Science at 59 adult and two youth educational programs in 2007 that was attended by 3,305 people. I was involved in conducting one in-service training sessions for County Extension Agents and assisted with one others. The purpose of most of the trainings that I am involved with are to increase the County Extension agents knowledge in soil and crop sciences. I maintain an active applied research program to address problems being encountered by producers of this area of Texas. Most of these efforts have been in the area of weed control and cotton crop termination. As information becomes available it is summarized in reports and forwarded to County Extension Agents. The Agents then distribute them to the appropriate clientele in their respective counties. Applied Research Tests established in 2007 include: five replicated cotton harvest aids and one replicated weed control test.

I assist the County Extension Agents in planning most agronomic result demonstrations and often assist them in securing necessary materials for the establishment of the tests. Tests assisted with in 2007 included, 27 cotton variety tests and 10 small grain variety tests. Often after the data is collected from the tests, I assist the agents in analyzing and summarizing the data. This information is compiled and shared with agents across the district, as well as, appropriate specialists. The job provides many new challenges and requires constant study to keep ahead of the need for information.

B. Cumulative Accomplishments Over Career

1989-2007

For 18 years I have worked as Extension Agronomist in West Central Texas. During that time I served as Extension Agronomist for Far West Texas for seven years and as Extension Agronomist for the Rolling Plains for one year. The major accomplishment has been to develop an active soil and crops educational and applied research program for the region. This has required the assistance of numerous Extension, TAES, and other organization personnel to update reference files and to address requests for timely and accurate information. As district agronomist, I have worked to gain the respect and confidence of County Extension Agents, producers, and businessmen. To date, I have given 927 educational presentations attended by 58,505 people (mostly producers). Presentations were given at 560 county production meetings, 178 field days, 61 program area committee meetings, and 58 agent training meetings. The applied research program involves a number of producers and numerous miles of travel. The main objective of these tests is to develop localized information to address producer questions.

1984-1988

The in-depth program addressed was perennial weed control. In 1984 a Perennial Weed Control Committee was approved by the Hockley County Extension Program Council Executive Board. The Committee consisted of two members from each of the four county precincts. The committee was instrumental in identifying objectives that needed to be reached to achieve success. Perennial weed control objectives were: 1) increase the efforts of producers in controlling perennial weeds, 2) increase the number of producers that utilize herbicides correctly, 3) determine the economic benefit from controlling perennial weeds, and 4) improve the uniformity of perennial weed control across the farm where herbicides are applied. To reach these goals several activities were needed, first, Spray Rig Calibration workshops were held in all communities to demonstrate how to calibrate sprayers and what impact the nozzle had on spray distribution. This quickly resulted in benefits from more uniform control of weeds treated and increased levels of control. The next need was to find what herbicides provided the highest level of weed control or suppression. This was done by establishing perennial weed control result demonstrations for the problem weeds being encountered by producers. This information was utilized by producers in two ways: 1) some producers changed their weed control programs to use the chemicals with the higher levels of control and to apply these chemicals in a more timely fashion, or 2) producers chose not to try to eradicate the weed problem but to suppress the weed to allow a crop to be produced, with increased yields paying for the herbicides applied. An evaluation conducted with all Hockley county producers in December 1987 indicated that 78 percent of the producers reported management changes being implemented on their farms to control or suppress perennial weeds with 90 percent of these reporting satisfactory results. Higher income was reported by most producers using the information provided through educational efforts.

1980-1984

The in-depth program addressed was irrigation efficiency. To address this program, the Irrigation Committee of the Extension Program Council determined that several activities needed to be conducted and information collected provided to producers through educational programs and printed information. Pumping plant efficiency tests were conducted on 13 producers wells to demonstrate that the motor and/or pump efficiency could be an expensive problem if not corrected. This effort was very useful, but due to the expense associated with replacing or repairing motors and pumps, it was generally used by a limited number of producers. Result demonstration work using soil moisture measuring devices proved to be more readily accepted by producers. Cotton, corn, grain sorghum, and soybean crops were grown using different soil moisture levels and different watering patterns to determine production practices that would result in reducing the amount of water applied while sustaining yield. From the information collected, corn producers could increase their profits the most by changing to an every-other-row watering pattern. Cotton producers could use a 2-in-1-out planting pattern and water between the two planted rows. Increase profit was reported by producers implementing the recommended irrigation practices. The use of sprinkler irrigation systems as well as surge flow equipment increases the producers opportunity to reduce water applied while maintaining acceptable yields.
