Manganese (Mn)

Manganese is absorbed largely as the divalent manganous cation (Mn++). Manganese is required for the synthesis of chlorophyll, but not part of the molecule. Takes part in oxidation-reduction reactions, especially in relation to iron compounds. Highly acid soils may increase solubility of manganese and cause plant toxicity.

Symptoms of manganese deficiency in plants include: interveinal chlorosis of young leaves. Gradation of pale green coloration with darker color next to veins. No sharp distinction between veins and interveinal areas as with iron deficiency.

Acute deficiency symptoms in animals causes Perosis or slipped tendons in poultry, poor hatch ability in eggs, lameness in pigs, deformed front legs of rabbits, bowleggedness in calves, females unable to suckle their young, and sterility in males.
