Career Overview:
I spent the first 20 years of my career working with crop producers and citizens in South Texas, West Texas and Southeastern Arkansas as an Extension Entomologist. My primary responsibility was transferring technology to agricultural and urban clientele to help them manage insect related problems. I conducted numerous experiments and result demonstrations.    Using information obtained locally and from professional meetings/literature, I was able to provide stake-holders with technology to address their needs. I worked on a wide variety of insect-related clientele problems, from household and ornamental plants to agricultural pest management during these years. My primary area of work and expertise was incorporation of insect management technologies into cotton production systems.
In Texas, the team of entomologists I led identified insecticide resistant tobacco budworm and cotton aphid populations and collaborated with others to develop management strategies. We also helped growers understand these management strategies and adopt new technology. I led the effort in Texas to develop and implement novel approaches to pink bollworm management. I worked with  interdisciplinary teams to provide cotton producers with information on cotton management decisions (Gossym-Comax, ICEM, and COTMAN), drip irrigated cotton and transgenic cotton systems.  In addition, I worked to develop integrated pest management systems on pecans, vegetables, grain crops and soybeans, and I worked with County Agents on management of white grubs in turf grass in West Texas. I was the statewide leader for alfalfa and forage crop IPM in Texas and in commercial tomato IPM in Arkansas. I developed expertise in thrips taxonomy as a part of my cotton and tomato integrated pest management efforts in Arkansas.
In  2000 I was named Program Director of the boll weevil eradication program in Texas and eastern New Mexico. This program involves some 30,000 Texas cotton producers growing 6.5 to 7 million acres of cotton annually. I directly supervised 22 upper-management and technical personnel.  Indirectly I supervised from 800 to 1,800 full-time and seasonal employees in this grower/state/federal collaborative program. In addition to personnel management, I worked closely with the Foundation Board, Technical Advisory Committee, Zone Steering Committees and the Zone Management Staff in the 20 boll weevil eradication zones in Texas and eastern New Mexico. I was responsible for all operational and technical aspects of the boll weevil and pink bollworm eradication programs. I worked with the Texas Foundation’s management team to develop operating budgets ranging from $35 to $124 million per year. A recent Texas A&M study put the value of the program at the farm level after the cost at $947 million over ten years (1996-2006). The Texas program, in concert with similar programs in other parts of the US and  Mexico, has made tremendous progress toward elimination of the boll weevil from North America. In addition, a sister program targeting the pink bollworm is nearing completion in West Texas. It will result in the elimination of pink bollworm from cotton producing areas in the western United States and northern Mexico.
In February 2009, I was hired as Statewide IPM Coordinator for the Texas AgriLife Extension IPM Program. My responsibilities include personnel management, liaison with grower groups and others involved in IPM, budget management, program direction, and program planning and reporting.

ESA, SWB-ESA, SEB-ESA (1996-2000).
