Martin Ranch Hunting Lease

The 4,961-acre Martin Ranch in Menard County serves as a ranch-scale laboratory for rangeland and wildlife research with an emphasis on ranching solutions. Livestock production on site includes cattle, sheep, goats, and livestock guardian dogs. The property’s wildlife management plan allows for a three-year hunting lease with two option years. 


Permitted wildlife harvests during applicable hunting seasons and required records.

First Season Annual fall survey may increase or decrease these deer numbers.

Required records for animal harvested:

Deer: age, sex, lactation status if female, gross Boone & Crockett score if antlered, field dressed weight.
Turkey: sex, beard length, spur length, live weight.
Dove: total number of hunters and number harvested by day.
Feral Pigs: sex, measured shoulder height, field dressed or live weight.


Accommodations

The property does not have a hunting cabin. Accommodations consists of a RV power hook up and a water spigot off a reservoir tank. This is located within the northeast side of the ranch on the west side of FM 2291. The existing cabin on site is not available for use.

Utilities are included in the lease rate.

The property has no existing blinds or feeders. Property has established roads.

Restrictions

The hunting party is allowed to erect a total of 12 feeders with blinds on the ranch. No more then 1 hunter/415 acres. Location of feeders and blinds must be coordinated with the Research Center Manager. It is the leasee’s responsibility to fence/secure the feeder to keep livestock/pig out, and only corn baiting will be allowed after October 1st.

No subleasing of any type is allowed.

Harvests must be logged immediately- – Logbook to be available for inspection at any time. Harvest totals from previous hunting season should be submitted by April 1st each year.

Harvesting of collard peccary, commonly known as javelina, is prohibited. Harvesting of quail is prohibited.

Restricted no-shooting areas are designated within 200 yards of all building including livestock working pens and storage containers. No blinds/feeders shall be placed within 50 yards of the property’s exterior perimeter.

No more than 10 people in total are allowed to stay (in travel trailers) on the property, and all are required to complete signed release forms to be on the property, for each occurrence. Permanent residence, defined as 14 or more consecutive days at the ranch, is prohibited.  

Road conditions during wet weather may require use of utility or all-terrain vehicles to prevent road damage.  Lessees are required to repair excessive damage to roads. 

All personal items must be removed from the ranch outside of deer, dove, and turkey season.

he Research Center Manager will inform the lessee of any research or facility access restrictions. Research may require full access to certain pastures and the lessee will be notified in advance of these activities. 

All alterations and removal of vegetation, any building modification or on-site storage must be coordinated and approved with the Research Center Manager.

The Research Center Manager will coordinate with the lessee for all carcass and trash disposal.
